School of Engineering Staff Profile – Couleen Maryschuk

Name:  Couleen Maryschuk

Title:  Administrative Assistant

When did you start with the School of Engineering?

November 2011, but have been with UBC since 2005 and 1990-95, and 1999-2005 with the previous institution of Okanagan University College.

What does your role entail?

Under the direction of the Director, I handle the complete faculty recruitment process, from posting the position right through to the appointment process and onboarding of a new faculty member.  Another big piece of my responsibilities includes the annual Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure process, assisting the Director and tracking each step of the year long process.  Also included in my responsibilities is scheduling of Peer Evaluations, Annual Review Meetings, Merit & PSA and anything related to faculty progress.

Tell us a bit more about yourself:

First generation Canadian born to a German/Polish immigrant family who came to Canada in 1952.  Spoke primarily German and very little English until I entered public school in grade one.

Have lived in the Kelowna area since 1969 with the exception of a few years back in Alberta and Vancouver.

Interesting fact:

Severe claustrophobia and had a major panic attack when visiting the Blue Grotto in Italy, need my space!

If you were to conduct your own engineering research, what would it be?

Eliminate or improve orchard burning in the spring and fall.  There has to be another way to disposing of orchard pruning’s other than burning which fills our valley with smoke which is hazardous to those with asthma and other breathing issues.  It could extend into our forestry industry as well when they do slash burning in the fall/winters.

I have a few more ideas as well.

When not in the office, what are your hobbies?

I enjoy everything and anything that involves “homemaking”, baking, cooking, gardening, etc.  I also have a passion for quilting, sewing, scrapbooking (traditional and digital).  Passions also include wine tasting and exploring new wineries and craft beer locales, adventuring on hikes and bike riding, enjoying local trips and travelling.

Who would you recommend for an upcoming staff profile?

Tanya Chartrand
