Earlier this year, School of Engineering PhD students Rubaiya Rumman and Fatemeh Niknahad took the stage at UBC Okanagan’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Finals. Their presentations are now available to watch in full.
Rumman showed how wood ash could help make lower carbon concrete. She presented just hours after successfully defending her PhD thesis, earning runner up and the Alumni UBC People’s Choice Award. “It was an incredible day, and I was honoured to be part of the 3MT competition,” she said afterward. Niknahad introduced a microwave sensor designed to detect black ice as it begins to form. “Instead of looking at the road, I sensed it,” she shared with the audience in framing her innovative idea. Watch Niknahad’s presentation, Microwave Ice Sensor.
