Course Planning

Advising Sheets

Advising sheets are updated annually to reflect the latest course offerings. First year students can refer to the first year planning guide or any of the advising sheets, regardless of program of study. The first year program is the same for all five programs.

How can I track my degree progress?

Workday’s Academic Progress Report (APR) is an excellent resource for you throughout your degree. The APR is accessible form your Academics tab in Workday and shows which courses you have already completed (waived, satisfied, etc.) and which courses you still have remaining to complete.

If there are any errors in your APR, either an error in the requirements, or courses that are in the Unused Registrations area that should be applied in the APR, students can request that Engineering Academic Services update it. Transfer credits, design, technical and alternative electives, and Concentration requirements all get manually added and you can ensure these credits are applied properly by filling out this form:

Academic Progress Report Update Request

Submitting this request generates the task for Engineering Academic Services who will email you once it is complete. This is especially important for students planning to graduate soon so they can ensure they are meeting the requirements before they apply to graduate or before the add/drop/swap deadlines.

What are course vectors?

The number of hours assigned each week to lectures or primary activity (first digit), and to laboratories or secondary activity (second digit) are shown in square brackets at the end of a course description. Where a third digit appears it refers to periods where discussions, tutorials, or assigned problems are done (tertiary activity). An asterisk (*) indicates alternate weeks. In cases where there are two vectors listed for one course, this means it is a course that spans both semesters (like ENGR 499). The first set of digits refers to the first term (September to December) and the second set following a semi-colon refers to the second term (January to May). Graduate courses and courses in some faculties are not designated with vectors.

E.g.: [3-0-1*] would mean the course had a weekly total of 3 hours of lectures, no laboratories, and
a 1 hour tutorial per two-week period.

[3-0-1; 3-0-1] would mean that the course continues over two terms with 3 hours of lectures
and a 1 hour tutorial weekly.

Advising Sheet Archive

Previous advising sheets will be posted here. If you would like to see a sheet earlier than what is posted here or ask about a specific course and whether it was a design or technical elective in the year taken, please email soe.academicservices@ubc.ca.

How each course is counted towards your BASC-O degree requirement, is based on the course completion year’s corresponding version of the advising sheet. For example, if you are a Mechanical Engineering student and you completed ENGR 401 in 2023 Winter – you would refer to the 2023 Winter version of the Mechanical Engineering Advising Sheet to confirm how ENGR 401 will be counted towards the degree requirements for the Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering at the Okanagan campus.
