Research Summary

Writing and learning transitions: both in the first year of university, and in graduate school - how do students acquire skill and competency in new genres? What are the best ways of supporting their transition?
Engineering communication across the curriculum, and from the curriculum to the workplace - how do students transfer what they have learned into the workplace? What are the best ways to ensure effective transfer of learning?

Biography

Dr. Labun teaches a variety of courses in technical communication to undergraduate and graduate engineering students. In 2010, Dr. Labun received the Faculty of Applied Science Engineering Co-op Program’s Faculty Member of the Year Award, and her teaching was recognized by the Teaching Excellence and Innovation Award from the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus (senior faculty) in 2011.    Dr. Labun is an active member of the Professional Communication Society (PCS), a society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).  She serves as UBC’s Okanagan Campus Representative for the American Society of Engineering Education.  In 2013, Dr. Labun was selected to be the Pacific North West-ASEE Outstanding Campus Representative for the year.

From September of 2011 to June of 2013, Dr. Labun served as the inaugural Director of the Centre for Scholarly Communication.
