Engineering Society President, Aliyah Akkurt, leads 1st-year engineering students in the School of Engineering Code of Ethics.
The School of Engineering, as part of the Faculty of Applied Science, launched the Iron Pin initiative in 2015. This ceremony was implemented in order to educate first-year engineering students about the Code of Ethics that the Engineering profession adheres to.
The SoE’s former Associate Dean, Dr. Spiro Yannacopoulos, was the champion of the Iron Pin Ceremony. He emphasized that starting in Year One, professionalism is expected from the start and throughout the duration of engineering studies at UBC.
This year’s ceremonies were held this week for all first-year undergraduate engineering students. Dr. Mina Hoorfar, Director of the School of Engineering, spoke about the ceremony and its importance, and then introduced Engineering Society (EngSoc) President Aliyah Akkurt who led the students through the pledge included in the Code of Ethics.
All students were provided with a copy of the Code of Ethics for their signature that will serve as a reminder of this ceremony, and an Iron Pin to be worn over their hearts for the duration of their degree.
All undergraduate students, faculty, and staff participated in the first-annual Iron Pin Ceremony in 2015.
