During the last week of classes, three events occur which are the highlight of the year for School of Engineering students, faculty, and staff.
Held on Wednesday, April 8th, the Design One Showcase highlighted the design skills of 1st year students in APSC 169. This year, students were given three project choices: a sustainable office heater (a project put forward by Roger Bizzotto of UBC), an outdoor garden musical instrument, or a sustainable shower/washing station (both projects suggested by Audrey Noga with Clubhouse Farms/Outdoor Opportunities).
The winning group included Murray Gaffney, Matt Henry, Landon Horne, Cameron McDermid, and Yufang Soong.
On Thursday, April 9th, the Hovercraft Competition held in UBC’s Okanagan campus gymnasium. More than 320 people attended this competition during which thirty-three 2nd year groups vied for four different awards: Fastest Racer, Highest Payload, Best Presentation, and Combined Race Winner.
Dr. Spiro Yannacopoulos, Associate Dean, presented the award for Combined Race Winner to Breanne Enright, Alexandra Haag, Brooke Franchuk, Cory Ahlfield, Carmen McIntosh, and Mitchell Lange.
Topping off the week, the Capstone Poster Session showcased 4th year Capstone projects on Friday, April 10th. Capstone is a required course for all fourth-year students, with each group including students from each specialization (civil, electrical, and mechanical).
Over the 8 months of their fourth year, forty-nine groups tackled projects proposed by industry partners throughout western Canada. At the Capstone Poster Session, all groups were judged on a short poster presentation and adherence to project guidelines.
First Place was awarded to Jayme Gordon, Alex Keklikian, and Aaron Heffelfinger. Second place went to Matthew Yip, Andre Prohoroff, Blake Cloutier, and Kyle Squire, while third place was won by Jordan Taylor, Kevin Lyall, Steven Leslie, and Lucas Jungmann.
The School of Engineering congratulates each and every student who put their heart and soul into their projects during the 2014-2015 school year!
To our first and second year event winners, congratulations – we are excited to see what the next few years bring your way!
And to our Capstone winners who are graduating in a few short months, huge congratulations – you make us proud!
