Mitacs Accelerate PhD Fellowship winner develops a stress-strain model and effectiveness of innovative sprayed FRP structural strengthening techniques of concrete columns
Congratulations to School of Engineering student Anant Parghi who recently won a prestigious Mitacs Accelerate Scholarship for three years at $30,000 per year.
The award allows Anant Parghi to study the seismic performance of concrete columns at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus as part of his PhD thesis, “Improved prediction models for concrete confined with various composites: experimental and numerical investigation.”
Over the past two years, Anant is working with Assistant Professor Dr. Shahria Alam in partnership with PolyRAP Pavement System Ltd. on structural rehabilitation and retrofitting of concrete columns with FRP composites, polymer concrete, utilization of recycled glass and recycled coarse aggregate, and nano materials as sustainable construction materials.
Anant’s research proposal describes the development of a generalized constitutive model and effectiveness of sprayed-FRP retrofit techniques on the seismic performance evaluation of reinforced concrete deficient columns to address some of the needs, and it enhances understanding of the sprayed-FRP confined concrete with different level of damage state. Anant is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SV NIT), Surat, Government of India. Currently he is on study leave for the doctoral study at The University of British Columbia. He started his PhD at UBC’s School of Engineering in September 2011; he anticipates finishing his doctorate by April 2015.
